Every student deserves equal access to education. For years, visually impaired students studying under the Jammu & Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) faced steep hurdles accessing learning materials in usable digital formats. Urdu-medium textbooks, in particular, were nearly impossible to find in screen-reader-compatible formats, forcing students to rely heavily on volunteers or simply go without equal learning opportunities. That barrier is now being dismantled.
Through the dedicated efforts of the Jammu & Kashmir Handicapped Association (JKHCA), JKBOSE textbooks—including previously unavailable Urdu-medium materials—are now live on Bookshare, the world’s largest online accessible library for individuals with print disabilities.
Transforming How Students Learn
By hosting these materials on Bookshare, students with blindness, low vision, dyslexia, or other reading difficulties can read, learn, and excel using tools tailored to their needs, including:
- Screen readers
- Text-to-speech (TTS) engines
- Refreshable Braille displays
With Bookshare offering resources across more than 40 languages, students in Jammu and Kashmir can now study independently, learn at their own pace, and participate fully in their academic journeys.
